Whilst radioactivity can be used to treat cancer cells, it is also a major cause of cancer. Consequently people who work in the nuclear industry have legal limits imposed on how much daily exposure is acceptable. This is checked by the use of a small badge which contains a special film that fogs when too much radiation has been received:
